We
are only about 10 minutes from the M6.
From
the South travelling on the M6
Leave
the motorway @ Junction 39. Turn L then R for the village of SHAP.
Turn R towards the North end of the village @ the Bulls Head opposite
the Chip shop, the minor road is signed for CROSBY RAVENSWORTH.
Follow the winding country road over the fell and down into Crosby
Ravensworth (aprox. 4 miles). In Crosby turn L at the T junction
and follow the road for 1 further mile. As you cross the cattle
grid and go up round the L hand corner, MEABURN HILL is the first
house on your L as you drop down into the village (wooden seat in
front of house on opposite side of road). Go past the house and
attached cottage (CHESTNUTS) and turn into the yard to park to the
rear of the house if staying at Meaburn Hill, or inside the gate
to the front of the cottage if staying at Chestnuts.
From the North travelling on the M6
Leave
the motorway @ Junction 40. Take the 2nd exit from the roundabout
and follow the A66 to the 2nd roundabout. Take the 4th exit for
the A6 and EamontBridge. Follow the A6 aprox 1 mile until you reach
the L hand turn for CLIBURN & BOLTON. Follow this winding road
past Wetheriggs pottery, through Cliburn towards Bolton. About 1
mile out of Cliburn take the R hand turn for KINGS MEABURN. Drive
through Kings Meaburn and at the foot of the hill turn R for LITTLEBECK
& MAULDS MEABURN. You will reach Maulds Meaburn after aprox.3
miles. Continue on through the village past two stone bridges, up
the hill and Meaburn Hill and Chestnuts are third on the right.
Park as above. NOTE: If travelling after dark it is perhaps easiest
to continue on the motorway to Junction 39, turn right for Shap
then follow the directions as for those travelling from the South.
There are fewer signposts to look for in the dark.
From the A66 driving from Scotch Corner
& M1
Leave
the A66 for APPLEBY in WESTMORLAND. Turn L over the Bridge over
the river Eden and follow the road up past the Castle for ORTON.
After aprox.4 miles take the R turn for MAULDS MEABURN (don’t
take the first road signed KINGS Meaburn). The winding road down
into the valley affords an excellent view over the village with
Meaburn Hill and Chestnuts in clear view on the opposite hillside.
Cross the cattle grid and then the stone bridge. Turn L up the hill,
signed for Crosby Ravensworth and turn in at the third house. Park
as above.
